W02 Insight Sharing – REL 211

One principle that stood out to me during my study of the New Testament this week is the teaching that disciples of Jesus Christ should be a light to others. In Matthew 5:14–16, Jesus teaches that His followers are “the light of the world” and that a light should not be hidden but placed where it can shine and give light to everyone in the house. This teaching reminds me that our actions and the way we live our lives can influence the people around us. Whether we realize it or not, others observe how we behave, how we treat people, and how we respond to challenges. Because of this, being a disciple of Christ includes the responsibility of reflecting His example in our daily lives.

I believe this teaching is important because many people come to understand the gospel not only through words but also through the example of others. When we try to live the teachings of Christ—showing kindness, honesty, patience, and compassion—we allow others to feel the love of God through our actions. Sometimes even small actions can have a powerful effect. A simple act of kindness, listening to someone who is struggling, or offering encouragement can help someone feel valued and supported. These moments can help people feel closer to God and remind them that they are not alone.

Another insight I gained is that being a light does not mean being perfect. No one is perfect except Jesus Christ. Instead, it means sincerely trying to follow Him and striving to improve each day. As we study the scriptures, pray, and try to live the gospel, our faith grows and our choices begin to reflect the teachings of Christ more naturally. When others see our efforts to live according to gospel principles, they may feel inspired to learn more about the Savior and draw closer to Him.

In my own life, this principle encourages me to be more aware of how my behavior affects others. I want to represent Christ in the way I treat people in my daily interactions—whether at school, at work, with my friends, or with my family. I realize that the way I speak, the respect I show to others, and the decisions I make can either strengthen or weaken my example as a disciple of Christ. When I try to live in a way that reflects His teachings, I feel greater peace and purpose in my life.

Ultimately, the Savior’s invitation to let our light shine is a call to live the gospel openly and sincerely. When we allow the light of Christ to guide our actions, we help bring more goodness, hope, and faith into the world. Even though our efforts may seem small, they can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
